A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
