Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Soldiers Table

Since the launch of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring celestial beings, fiends, and sinister influences expanding in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter concluded with a major cliffhanger and presented the premier party of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the fierce warrior (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

Considering a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the first four episodes of the new season serve as an Prelude, intertwining the individual narratives before splitting into three distinct groups: Warriors, Planners, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy gameplay experience where diplomatic options are scarce.

Initially, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the actions of the third episode show why these five characters are ideally matched for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to go next after a brutal first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and fled to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, beyond the urban center, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Additionally, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and cautions that it is a dangerous place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • However, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the group enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor swore a life debt to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that rule the setting for a range of causes, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The strong figure and The healer defied the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • The target is marked for death by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in search of the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the warrior group will not appear next week, leaving the rest of the cast members to round up the Questers and Schemers tables.

Fans can expect learning which characters will be where in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
