Administration officials confirmed the initiation of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that employees at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services used by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who deliver essential functions to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a Republican-backed bill to restore funding unless it includes provisions related to health policy. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until the following week, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government running,” the advocate said. “Our flight regulators, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the funding gap.
